Kansas-born singer-songwriter and rapper Janelle Monae is recognized as one of the most groundbreaking artists in the music scene right now. The award-winning performer has made waves across the music world, as well as TV and film. She has earned eight Grammy nominations, two Black Reel Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards, three Critics’ Choice Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and an NAACP Image Award. She’s notable for her striking lyrics and exemplary soprano voice. Meanwhile, her music cannot be contained in a single box. Monae has dabbled in jazz, pop, hip-hop, gospel, soul, and many more. In 2014, Monae was one of the women who performed at the White House alongside Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Melissa Etheridge, and Ariana Grande. The performance, broadcasted through PBS, was titled “Women of Soul.” This groundbreaking concert celebrated the influence and impact of American women artists. That same year, Monae, a prominent feminist and activist, received the Harvard College Women’s Center Award for Achievement in Art and Media.
With her many accomplishments, Monaein 2023 starkly contrasts her days selling her demos from the trunk of her Mitsubishi sedan in 2003. Over the last two decades, she has become one of the most prominent black performers. She often uses her music to express themes of feminism, being a black woman, and working-class members. During an interview, Monae shared, “I don’t shy away from my lived cultural experiences. I’m a Black queer woman from the middle of America. I bring that with me everywhere I go. I wear it proudly. I might show up in a meeting with an astronaut suit on — I have several times, actually. We embrace the things that make us unique.”
This summer, Janelle Monae is set to release her fourth studio album, The Age of Pleasure. The album has already been preceded by hit singles “Float” and “Lipstick Lover.” The album follows the chart-performing predecessors, The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady, and Dirty Computer. Catch Monae this fall as she debuts her new music at the Arizona Financial Theatre on Sunday, 15th October 2023! Tickets are now up for grabs!
